Created a cardboard model of my dog Snowpaws. Using the software SketchUp, corrugated cardboard, and a laser cutter I was able to create a physical model of my dog with proportions that looked just like her. A boxy, geometricĀ model of the dog was created in SketchUp with horizontal and vertical slices.
Process
Inspiration
3D model in SketchUp
Each slice of the model was spaced 1" for a 12" tall model. Using 1" spacing per slice, I have 15 slices in length and 6 slices in width. After starting the process of interfacing, I realized with that many slices, it would take too much time to cut out the slits. I ended up reducing the amount of slices in length/width.
First iteration
For the first iteration I measured my cardboard incorrectly so the slices were all to thin. The dog doesn't stay together when I assemble all pieces. This means I have to go back to very early on and re-slice all intersections. The piecesĀ a little loose in their spots, because intersections are too thin and not deep enough. I rubber banded the legs together and the model is complete.
Final Result
After re-slicing my model to fit the corrugated cardboard width of 1/8", the intersections fit smoothly and the model holds together and stands up on its own without rubber bands or glue.
This is the final result.
